Tight, achy, and tired of it? Let's find out why.

Some pain doesn't come from a joint. It comes from muscles, tendons, and the tissue around them getting overworked, irritated, and stuck. Over time that can build up into adhesions (think of them as little knots of tough tissue) that limit how you move and keep that same spot flaring up again and again.

Active Release Technique, or ART, is a hands-on approach designed to find those problem areas and get them moving again.

What is ART?

ART is a patented soft tissue technique used by a lot of pro and elite athletes. During treatment, Dr. Kate applies targeted pressure to the affected tissue while you move through a specific range of motion. That combination of tension and movement helps release restricted tissue, improve how it glides, and restore healthier movement.

Every treatment is hands-on and specific to you. There are over 500 ART protocols, so we're not guessing. We're working on the exact tissue that's causing you trouble.

What can it help with?

ART is commonly used for muscle, tendon, ligament, and nerve-related issues like:

  • Neck and shoulder tension
  • Low back and hip tightness
  • Sciatica-type pain
  • Rotator cuff irritation
  • Tennis elbow, golfer's elbow, and carpal tunnel symptoms
  • IT band, hamstring, and calf issues
  • Plantar fasciitis and shin splints
  • Running, lifting, and sports injuries
  • Headaches from tight neck and jaw muscles

Not sure if ART is the right fit? We'll assess you at your first visit and give you an honest recommendation.

Why ART at Anchor is different

Dr. Kate is ART-certified and soft tissue care is the heart of what we do. ART pairs really well with shockwave therapy for stubborn, chronic injuries, and with joint adjustments and movement work to address the whole picture. We also use Kinetisense motion capture to see how you move, so we can spot what's driving the problem and track your progress along the way.

Each visit is built around how you're feeling that day. No cookie-cutter treatment plans here.

What to expect

  • It's hands-on. You'll be actively moving while Dr. Kate works on the tissue.
  • It can be intense, in a good way. Many people describe it as a "hurts so good" feeling. We'll always work within your comfort level.
  • Some soreness is normal. You may feel a little sore for a day or so, similar to after a good workout.
  • Keep moving. Movement helps your body heal, so we'll often give you simple exercises to do at home between visits.
